" The Savant Spoon was founded on the basis of scientific findings on how game and predator fish feed and react to baitfish. Unlike many lures that attempt to simply "copy" the action and color of other lures the Savant Spoon was designed after extensive review of marine and freshwater research on the habits and attributes of Ciscoes, herring, alewives, rainbow smelt, suckers and shad - how they swim, their reaction to gamefish, the sounds, their environment, seasonal changes, and electrical stimulation given off during feeding.

While preyfish often live in different types of water and climates from one another many of their "attributes" are eerily similar. Tom Manning, the designer of the Savant Spoon, began fishing over 40 years ago and he has fished all over the world. Like you, he often noticed wherever he fished certain lures and approaches consistently worked no matter the species he fished for.

Tom has also spent nearly 30 years as a scientific publisher. As past CEO of BIOSIS and Biological Abstracts, the world's largest database of life science literature, documents, and research used by academic researchers. He had access to thousands of scientific articles and reports often only available to the scientific community. He found a combination of certain colors, size, movement, sound, and electric impulses by baitfish that attract gamefish reoccurred throughout the literature. He then set out to combine his observations about lure success with science.

His first step was to subject many of the fine spoons on the market today to scientific criteria to see which of these lures matched the scientific findings found in the literature. A pattern fell into place and explained why some of those Lake Trout and Salmon lures worked and others were essentially worthless. The "five key attributes" mentioned above were the "aspects of the baitfish," the primary forage for Lake Trout and Salmon found in research to consistently produce strikes. Tom included the "five key attributes" into a new design.

Applying the preciseness of these attributes is critical. For example, it's not good enough for the spoon to just move - it has to mimic exactly the movement of baitfish. This seems like and obvious and simple observation but most lures on the market today simply do not swim the way real bait swim. Form must meet function so only the finest materials are used from special alloys and precise production of the spoon's shape to prevent line twist at the slowest and fastest trolling and retrieving speeds.
